Was Pineapple Express a strain before the movie?

Seth Rogen says no: “There was no Pineapple Express weed before the movie.”8,9 G13 Labs, according to Weedmaps, claims it originated the strain in the mid-2000s, before the 2008 film.2

Why is it called Pineapple Express?

Rogen says the film took its title from a weather pattern, the atmospheric river that carries tropical moisture from near Hawaii to the West Coast, and Leafly describes the strain as named after the film.7,10,11 Its most reported flavor is pineapple.2

A different, indica-dominant strain: Pineapple Express × Huckleberry Hound, bred by Annunaki Genetics and also called Pineapple Purple Skunk, per Leafly.15 It is the most common near-miss name in our lab data (137 results excluded).12
