Is Pineapple Express indica or sativa? Its genetics and lineage

Pineapple Express is usually described as a sativa-dominant hybrid of Trainwreck, a Northern California hybrid, and Hawaiian, a tropical sativa.1,2,3 The parentage is disputed: G13 Labs, which claims to have originated the strain, now lists Big Bud × Hawaiian Skunk and calls it indica-dominant, and SeedFinder lists seven breeders’ versions under the name.4,5,6

The two parents

Trainwreck is a Northern California hybrid bred from Mexican and Thai sativas and Afghani indicas.2 Leafly says the name comes either from growers raising it near a train wreck in Arcata or from the plant’s sprawling growth, and lists Pineapple Express among its offspring.2 Barney’s Farm describes it as a cross of Afghani, Mexican sativa and Thai landraces.11

Hawaiian is a sativa that Leafly users associate with happy, creative effects and a tropical-fruit aroma; Barney’s Farm calls the parent it uses a landrace Hawaiian sativa selected by the region’s farmers over generations.3,11 Leafly’s Hawaiian page lists Pineapple Express among Hawaiian’s own parents, the reverse of its Pineapple Express page, so we do not use that entry.1,3

Which parents? The accounts

Most sources agree on Trainwreck and a Hawaiian sativa.1,11,12 The breeder most often credited with the strain lists something else today, and a third breeder pairs Trainwreck with Kona Gold.4,5,13

We describe Pineapple Express as “usually listed as Trainwreck × Hawaiian”, the majority account, and name G13 Labs’ version wherever its parents differ.

How sativa is it?

Most sources call Pineapple Express sativa-dominant: Leafly labels it a sativa-dominant hybrid with energizing effects, and AllBud, Barney’s Farm and Crop King each give 60% sativa and 40% indica; Weedmaps lists it simply as a hybrid.1,4,11,12,17 Versions with other parents lean the other way: G13 Labs’ Big Bud × Hawaiian Skunk is 70% indica, Barney’s Farm’s autoflower is 70% indica, and Zambeza’s Pineapple × Lemon Kush is mostly indica.5,18,19

One name, many seed versions

There is no single seed line. Weedmaps says many growers and 11 seed banks each set out to create the “true” Pineapple Express, and SeedFinder lists seven breeders’ versions, several with no Trainwreck in them.4,6

What our lab data adds

Our strict name matching excluded 376 results across all product types (133 of them flower) sold under near-miss names, led by “Purple Pineapple Express” (137 results).22 Leafly lists Purple Pineapple Express, also called Pineapple Purple Skunk, as a different, indica-dominant strain: Pineapple Express × Huckleberry Hound, bred by Annunaki Genetics.9 Because the matcher reads a bare number as a lot code, 2 results labelled “Pineapple Express #2” are inside the 461 tests; the label alone cannot show whether they are G13 Labs’ Pineapple Express #2, a Skunk cross.10,22
